Located in China’s Xinjiang autonomous region, Lop Nur sits at the eastern end of the Taklimakan Desert. On this photograph taken from the international space station (ISS) in august 2016, potash evaporation ponds are visible.This potassium salt provides a major nutrient required for plant growth, making it a key ingredient in fertilizer. An area to the north west of Lop Nur has been used as a nuclear testing site.
