The Veil Nebula, detail, NGC 6992-6995

Here is the eastern end of the Veil Nebula known technically as NGC 6992-6995. The rampaging gas gains its colors by impacting and exciting existing nearby gas. The supernova remnant lies about 1,400 light-years away towards the constellation of Cygnus.This image is based on data acquired by the Oschin Telescope at the Mount Palomar Observatory.
