LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite) was launched in June 2009 with Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) payload aboard an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. LCROSS will seek a definitive answer about the presence of water ice at the lunar south pole using the spent second stage Atlas Centaur rocket that will impact on the moon's surface.
