Active galaxy M77 (NGC 1068) in Cetus

Messier 77 is a galaxy in the constellation of Cetus, located some 47 million light-years away from us. The galaxy belongs to a class of galaxies known as Seyfert galaxies, which have highly ionised gas surrounding an intensely active centre. This image was obtained using the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS2) instrument mounted on Unit Telescope 1 (Antu) of the VLT.
