Artist's concept of the Lunar Prospector spacecraft into Moon's orbit. The probe was launched January 06 1998 ; one of its most significant finds was confirmation that there could be subsurface frozen water near the Moon's polar region.
On July 31 1999, the mission ended when the spacecraft was deliberately directed to a crash landing into a crater near the Moon's South pole.
