An Ariane 40, with no strap-on booster, lifts off from the Launch Zone of the Ariane Launch Complex no.2 (ELA-2) at the Guiana Space Centre, Europe's space port, on one of its rare daylight launches, on December 3, 1999. The payload for this launch (V124) was Helios 1B, a French military observation satellite. Clementine, a military technology microsatellite was flown piggyback on an Ariane Structure for Auxiliary Payloads (ASAP-4). The Ariane 40 is the least powerful version of the Ariane 4.
