Here is a comparison showing the galaxy before (left) and after the supernovae events. The image in the centre shows the supernova 2005CS (which appeared in the galaxy M51 on June 28 2005); the exploding star is the white dot at center of the image. The image at right shows the supernova SN2011dh, which appeared on may 31 2011.
