Nebulae in constellation Orion are photographed in a singe exposure telephoto image from the Cerro Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert, Chile. With its dark and transparent sky, Paranal is home to some of the world's leading telescopes. This is the Very Large Telescope (VLT), operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). It is composed of four 8-metre telescopes and smaller auxiliary telescopes, each 1.8 metres in aperture (appears in the foreground) which are important elements of the VLT interferometer. The Orion Nebula (M42) appears on the left and the Horsehead dark nebula, silhouetted against a large emission cloud, is on the right, next to the Flame Nebula and stars of the Orion's Belt.
