The archaeological grounds at Ancient Mantineia lie approximately thirteen km northwest of Tripoli. Lying in a valley and surrounded by major mountains, the area is best known for the epic battle between Sparta and Athens (and their respective allies) in 418 BC during one of the Peloponnesian wars (431-404 BC) between these two powers. The area today is dominated by four structures, namely Aghia Foteini, the Heroes Temple which is dedicated to those who fell during war while fighting for their homeland, the Ancient Theatre (4th century BC) and the Peristyle Fountain. With the exception of the ancient theatre, the three other monuments were designed by the architect Kostas Papatheodorou and finally completed in 1973. The design sought to combine elements from the time of Ancient Greece, the Byzantium as well as modern-day Greece but, in the case of Aghia Foteini, it has created a huge dichotomy and controversy to this day owing to its unorthodox appearance (both external and internal) where, for example, the internal floor is richly adorned with mosaics associated with Ancient Greece.
