The sun, which is still below the horizon, lies nearly straight below the moon here, as can be seen by the orientation of the moon's "horns", the tips of the crescent. The "dark" side of the moon is visible from Earthshine, the sun's light reflected back from the Earth. The thin crescent is visible, seen here just one day before new moon, brilliantly illuminated by the direct sun.
