ASTRO-1 telescopes are documented in the payload bay of the space shuttle Columbia, and backdropped against the cloud-covered surface of the Earth. In the center of the frame are three ultraviolet telescopes mounted and precisely coaligned on a common structure, called the cruciform, that is attached to the instrument pointing system.
