Technicians prepare to install a solar panel on the Mariner H spacecraft in preparation for its launch to Mars. Following the may 8 1971 launch, the spacecraft was designated Mariner 8. A second Mariner Mars spacecraft has been launched 10 days later. Mariner 8 never reached the planet Mars but Mariner 9 successfully orbited the red planet in november 1971.
