The WMAP (Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe) in orbit about the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point (L2 ) a about 1.5 million km from Earth. Its goal is to map out minute temperature differences in the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation in order to help test theories of the nature of the universe.
The probe was launched on June 30 2001
