Hurricane Katrina seen over Louisiana.
Hurricanes and typhoons draw their energy from warm tropical seas: the warmer the water, the more fuel (in the form of water vapor) for their engines. Note the correspondence between the storm tracks and the sea surface temperature response (cooling of waters); this is particularly noticeable for hurricanes Dennis, Emily, and Katrina.
GOES-12 imagery acquired on August 30 2005.
