Image Size 300 DPI: 50 * 12 cm

Ultraviolet image of the star Mira taken with the Galex satellite in November and December 2006. In this image, Mira is moving from left to right. It is visible as the small white dot in the bulb shape at right. The shed material can be seen in light blue. The dots in the picture are stars and distant galaxies. The large blue dot at left is a star that is closer to us than Mira. Mira is traveling so fast (130 kilometers per second) that it's creating a bow shock, or build-up of gas, in front of it, as can be seen here at right.
