Spiral galaxy M83 in Hydra

M83 (NGC 5236) is located in the southern constellation Hydra at 15 millions light years from the sun. It is classified as intermediate between normal and barred spiral galaxies. The image was taken through a remote controlled 20 inch Ritchey-Chretien telescope using an eleven mega-pixel camera. Fourteen hour exposure between May and June of 2006 with additional exposures taken in April 2007 from over seven thousand feet above sea level in the mountains of south central New Mexico.
