Lake Chad borders four countries in West Africa: Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon ; it was once the sixth largest lake in the world, but persistent drought since the 1960s shrank it to about one tenth of its former size.
Vegetation appears in red colored areas in these three images obtained by the Landsat satellite, from left to right : Landsat-1 on December 08 1972, Landsat-4 December 14 1987 and Landsat-7 on December 18 2002.
