Laser beam fired from CERGA observatory, France, during the january 21 2000 lunar eclipse.
Pulses of laser light fired from the Earth are reflected by the lunar laser ranging reflector left on the moon during Apollo missions. The round-trip travel time of a laser pulsed from the Earth to the Moon and back again allows to calculate with great accuracy the distance between the two celestial bodies.
